CHENNAI, 18 January, 2010 - The Chennai Corporation today began an intensive clean-up of the trash strewn around the Broken Bridge prompted by a citizen clean-up of a nearby beach stretch on 17 January, 2010. By the end of the first day's cleaning, they had filled on hook-top bin to the brim, and sent two van loads of trash to Pallikaranai for disposal. A hook-top bin can easily accommodate 40 tons of trash. However, since most of the trash is bulky packaging -- styrofoam or thermocol, PET bottle, carry bags and slippers -- the Corporation supervisor says the volume would be large, but the weight lower. According to the supervisor, Mr. Ganesan, total clean-up will take at least two more days.
Reclaim Our Beaches welcomes the Corporation's initiative, and hopes to set up a system by which the Corporation can constantly be provided with inputs and assistance in implementing people-friendly schemes in Chennai, starting with the Besant Nagar beach area.
The Citizens' Beach Clean-up yesterday of the Theosophical Society beach yielded about 6 tons of trash in 90 bags. All this was collected in two hours flat by a group of about 100 people. We expected 50 people, but double the number showed up. We're not complaining.
Neel Metal Fanalca deputed staff, and provided equipment and the Corporation of Chennai deputed staff and a supervisor to oversee the clean-up. We thank both organisations for doing their jobs, but extend our heartfelt gratitude to the conservancy workers who clean-up after the rest of us in this city.
